ABOUT THE SONG

This track is one of the last songs I wrote while on my van life journey, which started in Austin, TX.

It was born out of that experience—being on the road, constantly moving, and finding yourself in the spaces between places.

The song began with a church organ-style synth sample that gave me instant Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” vibes. I built the entire track around that, layering in a driving kick pattern and quickly forming the melody.

It’s easily one of my favorite and most personal songs on the record with the musical elements driving momentum and optimism, helping to mirror the lyrics' shift...

showing how pain pushes you toward growth and something better.

Demo // Foundation // Rough Mix

Demo Version - First Point When the Song Started to Come Together! (definitely a rough cut)

Foundation Mix - The first full arrangement, before live drums complete the track!

Rough Mix - This is the mix I did with all the parts in place before being sent off to Ben!

Behind the Lyrics

The lyrics for this song were born out of a tough breakup, but it’s really about finding confidence and direction in the middle of chaos.

I wrote this while going through a time in my life when I felt pretty counted out—unsure of where I was heading.

I tried to capture that momentum shift of going from searching for anything to make you feel whole, to finally realizing you’ve got what it takes to move forward.

The chorus—“And I, I know, we’re leaving it”—is a declaration.

It’s about leaving behind the doubt, the second-guessing, and trusting in the journey.

Studio Version

We're Leaving It

Spent so much time
Wanting to be somebody else
See I believed it was just me
Who's felt they've lost themselves
Spent so many nights alone
Since we gave it up
I got to thinking what I got
Just ain't good enough

Yea still it brings me down
It ain't going away

So I reached for love
I took their drugs
Tried for anything
When what I want and what I got
Ain't at all the same
Pass the blood
I hope there's something deep within these veins
And what it is
I pray dear god that I've got enough

And I, I know, I know
We're leaving it
And I, I know, I know
And I, I know, I know
Just believe in it
And I, I know, I know

Spent every moment moving
Wanting to be somewhere else
Could never find it in my place
And put back on the shelf
But there's gotta be a change
When the dawn will come
When what I want and what I got
Will be good enough

And I, I know, I know
We're leaving it
And I, I know, I know
And I, I know, I know
Just believe in it
And I, I know, I know

And as your calling on this payphone
Just when I thought that we had let it go
Saying all the things you've never said
Though
I really should go

And I, I know, I know
We're leaving it
And I, I know, I know
And I, I know, I know
Just believe in it
And I, I know, I know

And I, I know, I know
We're leaving it
And I, I know, I know
And I, I know, I know
Just believe in it
And I, I know, I know

And I, I know, I know
We're leaving it
And I, I know, I know
And I, I know, I know
Just believe in it
And I, I know, I know

Live Recording Sessions

Recording Drums with Nate Barnes - Boulder, CO

Nate has this incredible ability to take a basic drum sample and turn it into something fully realized in no time. It was amazing to watch him map out the song after just a couple of listens and come up with drum parts that fit way better than what I’d originally sketched.

Here’s a look at one of those quick sessions where we took the track to the next level!
