Back2Enemies

ABOUT THE SONG

I wrote Back2Enemies while I was in Austin, TX producing all the other songs I wrote while on the road…

I was listening to The National a lot at the time, and was infatuated with their ethereal synth sounds.  While working on production for another song, this synth patch came together so well that it made me want to write a whole new song with it.

Hence, Back2Enemies was written…

The beginning synth that follows throughout the song serves as this haunting backdrop – like a looming premonition of the dangers waiting ahead.

Behind the Lyrics

The lyrics for this song came rather quickly for me, as I had just gotten out of a rollercoaster of a relationship, where we would agree to call it quits, and then another hookup would trigger a reboot of the whole thing...

It would be done and over, then a call or text was made, we’d meet up, and everything would start all over again only to fall apart as it had many times before…

by the end of it, we were both left feeling like: “these hollow bones you’ve made me…”

Back2Enemies

Studio Version

Back2Enemies

We first started as liars

Cold calling as friends

So what the hell would it matter

Well what we did with our hands

Now we

Come, come, come

Come back

Back to enemies

As we get, get, get

Get back to reality

Now

But you will bite and you’ll take

And I’ll claw and I’ll break

But it will never mean anything else

I will pull and dig in

And you’ll push and you’ll pin

But we will never be anything else

Now

I ran to you

I ran to you baby

With you not here it’s all too quiet in my room

But I

I ran from you

I ran from you honey

Felt if we kept this up

It’d split us both in two

And it goes, goes, goes

Goes back into a drowning drone

A drowning drone now lately

Which flows, flows, flows

Flows back into my hollow bones

These hollow bones you’ve made me

We first started as liars

Cold calling amends

Since we were perfectly tattered

It led us to threadbare ends

Now we come, come, come

Come back

Back to enemies

As we get, get, get

Get back to reality

Now

You will bind and you’ll wait

And I’ll scream and I’ll bait

But it will never mean anything else

I will stretch and I’ll scrape

And you’ll flex and reshape

But it will never be anything else

Now

I ran to you

I ran to you baby

With you not here it’s all too quiet in my room

But I

I ran from you

I ran from you honey

Felt if we kept this up it’d split us both in two

And it goes, goes, goes

Goes back into a drowning drone

A drowning drone now lately

Which flows, flows, flows

Flows back into my hollow bones

These hollow bones you’ve made me
